The best Thailand visa for digital nomads.

The 5-year DTV is designed for workcation applicants, while the LTR Work-from-Thailand route is limited to employees of qualifying overseas companies. Neither is a blanket permit for Thai employment. Compare the evidence, fees and tax treatment before choosing.

Key checks
DTV is worth checking when
You can document an eligible workcation purpose, the required funds and the applying mission's current checklist.
LTR is worth checking when
You are an overseas employee who can pass BOI's income, employer, contract and health-cover or deposit tests.
Neither route proves
Permission for Thai employment. Work scope, tax residence and the income flow remain separate decisions.
// Start with the work relationship

Your payer and evidence decide the shortlist.

“Digital nomad” is a lifestyle label, not a visa category. Classify the real activity first; then compare the route, work boundary, stay pattern and tax exposure.

  1. Identify who pays you

Separate an overseas employer, foreign clients, Thai clients and a Thai employer. A remote-work route does not automatically authorise local employment or every commercial activity.

  2. Inventory evidence you already hold

List contracts, employer records, portfolio material, income history and liquid funds. DTV and LTR test different evidence; income alone does not satisfy the LTR employer test.

  3. Map the stay pattern

Model entries, extensions, reporting and travel against the actual year. Visa validity is not the same thing as permission to remain continuously.

  4. Check labour and tax boundaries

Confirm the activity with the responsible authority and obtain personal tax advice before assuming that foreign payment, a visa name or a 180-day threshold answers the full question.

// The short version

The DTV (Destination Thailand Visa) is a five-year, multiple-entry category with 180 days per entry and a possible one-time extension of up to another 180 days for that entry. For its workcation purpose, official mission checklists ask for evidence such as overseas employment documents or a professional portfolio, plus financial evidence of at least ฿500,000.

The LTR Work-from-Thailand Professional route is narrower than its name suggests. It requires qualifying income and an employment contract with a qualifying overseas company. BOI states that this category does not receive a digital work permit and cannot undertake income-generating work for a Thai employer. DTV and LTR fees and document details must be checked with the office where you apply.

// The verdict

Choose by evidence and intended activity

DTV workcation

For applicants who can document remote work

The DTV can fit a remote employee, freelancer or other workcation applicant who can show the applying mission the required work and financial evidence. Treat it as a visa category, not as a general Thai work permit, and confirm the mission's local fee and checklist before applying.

LTR Work-from-Thailand

For employees of qualifying overseas companies

Income alone is not enough. BOI also tests the overseas employer and employment contract. This LTR category has a foreign-sourced-income exemption under Royal Decree 743, but BOI expressly says it does not issue a digital work permit and is not for Thai-employer work.

Thai employment

Use a category built for local work

If a Thai entity will employ or pay you, neither the DTV workcation purpose nor LTR Work-from-Thailand is the answer stated by these official sources. Check a work-authorised category such as an eligible LTR Highly Skilled Professional, SMART or Non-B route with the responsible authority.

The detail that decides it

A DTV is not a work permit. Official materials describe workcation applicants and the evidence missions may accept; they do not create blanket permission for Thai employment or every commercial activity. If your activity touches Thai clients, a Thai entity or local staff, get case-specific immigration and labour advice before relying on the DTV.

The exemption transition has a confirmed start date. The MFA's 3 September briefing confirms Gazette publication on 31 August and commencement on 15 September 2026. The replacement has 30-day and 15-day exemption groups; check the current nationality chart, including any applicable bilateral treatment. Entries before commencement remain under the previous rules, and already granted admissions remain valid until their stamped expiry. Other visa categories are unaffected by this exemption change.

Tax residence and visa status are separate. Under Revenue Department guidance, spending at least 180 days in Thailand in a tax year makes a person resident for Thai personal-income-tax purposes. Royal Decree 743 grants the foreign-sourced-income exemption to the LTR Wealthy Global Citizen, Wealthy Pensioner and Work-from-Thailand categories; Highly Skilled Professionals instead have a separate 17% treatment for qualifying employment income. A DTV itself does not supply that exemption.

Watch the 180-day clock — two of them

There are two separate 180-day numbers a nomad must track. One is the DTV's 180 days per entry (extendable once by another 180) — a stay limit. The other is the 180 days per calendar year tax-residency threshold. They are unrelated, and confusing them is how people get surprised by a Thai tax bill. Plan both deliberately.

Digital-nomad visas — questions, answered

What is the best visa for a digital nomad in Thailand?

There is no automatic winner. The DTV can fit a workcation applicant who can document remote work and at least ฿500,000 in financial evidence. LTR Work-from-Thailand fits employees who satisfy BOI's income, overseas-employer, insurance or deposit, and documentation tests.

Does the DTV give a Thai work permit?

No. Official DTV materials describe workcation applicants and require supporting work evidence, but the visa is not a general work permit or permission for Thai employment. Confirm any Thai-facing activity with the competent authorities.

Does LTR Work-from-Thailand include a digital work permit?

No. BOI explicitly says Work-from-Thailand Professional holders are not granted a digital work permit and cannot engage in income-generating work for Thai employers. Other eligible LTR categories may apply for a work permit for Thai employment.

How is a DTV fee determined?

MFA's central reference material states ฿10,000, but embassies publish local-currency fees; for example, Washington lists USD 400. Use the fee shown by the mission or e-Visa office handling your application.

How long can I stay in Thailand on a DTV?

The visa is valid for five years with multiple entries. Each entry permits up to 180 days, and Immigration may grant one extension of up to another 180 days for that entry. A separate 180-day annual threshold is relevant to Thai tax residence.
