The comparison keeps 12 common route families in one place. Every card identifies the work limitation and opens the responsible Thai eVisa, BOI or Thailand Privilege source.

Important LTR distinction

The LTR Work-from-Thailand Professional category is for remote work for an overseas employer. BOI states that this category does not qualify for a work permit and cannot be used for income-generating work with a Thai employer. Other LTR categories have different work rules.

This is a screening tool, not an eligibility decision. Rules can vary by nationality, purpose, embassy and in-country history. Open the responsible authority's page and verify the document list before paying or booking around an application.

Five route families to understand first

DTV (Destination Thailand Visa). A multi-entry route with 180-day stays for qualifying remote-work, activity and dependent cases. The evidence, permitted activity and extension conditions matter more than the five-year headline.

Non-O Retirement. A residence-based route for people aged 50 or older, commonly supported by qualifying bank funds or monthly income. Renewal, reporting and document requirements continue after entry.

LTR (Long-Term Resident). A BOI-administered programme for defined high-income, skilled, investment and retirement categories. The thresholds are high, but qualifying applicants receive a different work and reporting framework.

Thailand Privilege. A paid membership route focused on long stays and service benefits. Membership cost replaces some of the recurring extension friction, but it is not permission to work.

Non-O Marriage. A family-based route for spouses of Thai citizens, with its own financial evidence and renewal process. Work authorisation remains a separate question to resolve.

Before you choose

Five answers that change the shortlist.

Can I work in Thailand on these visas?

Only some routes allow work, and the conditions differ. LTR, SMART, Non-B and Media routes can support qualifying work; the DTV is not permission to take Thai employment. Retirement, Privilege, tourist and education routes do not themselves permit work.

When do I become a Thai tax resident?

Generally after 180 or more days in Thailand within a calendar year. Foreign-income treatment is nuanced and has changed; take qualified advice for your facts rather than treating a visa summary as tax advice.

Do I have to use an agent?

No. Many applications can be handled directly. If you choose assistance, verify the provider, understand exactly what is being filed and pay them directly; this publication takes no agent commission.

Which route is fastest?

Processing depends on nationality, embassy, evidence and route. Online entry routes may be quicker than options that require in-country extensions or bank seasoning. Confirm the current timeline before booking around it.

What must I file before arrival?

Foreign arrivals must complete the official Thailand Digital Arrival Card within the required pre-arrival window. It is separate from the visa itself. Open the official TDAC service.
