The cheapest lawful stay route is the one you qualify for and can sustain.
A visa fee alone cannot rank Thailand's routes. Compare eligibility, required funds, application location, travel, extensions, insurance or study, and work permissions using current official instructions.
Key checks
- Filter before pricing
- Remove routes that do not match your nationality, purpose, age, activity, finances, dependants or intended term.
- Model the complete term
- Include applications, travel, extensions, tuition, insurance, evidence, tied-up funds and renewal burden—not only the headline fee.
- Verify activity separately
- A cheap stay status does not prove permission to work. Check the intended activity with the responsible authority.
A cheap fee can hide an expensive stay.
Compare only routes you can lawfully use, then count the money, time and restrictions required to keep them valid. Annualising the application fee alone produces the wrong answer.
Prove eligibility first
Remove routes that fail the age, purpose, family, employer, course, nationality or evidence test. An unavailable route has no meaningful “cheap” price.
Count locked and recurring money
Separate fees from Thai-bank balances, insurance, tuition, membership, professional help and travel. A deposit is not a fee, but it still affects liquidity.
Price the administration
Include entries, extensions, reporting, document renewals, bank seasoning and processing-office visits over the actual period you intend to stay.
Protect the activity you need
Confirm work, study and family permissions separately. The lowest-cost status can be the wrong choice if it prevents the activity that funds or justifies the move.
Start with purpose and eligibility. Retirement, family, education, remote-work, employment and tourism routes are not interchangeable products. Required bank balances are evidence or eligibility conditions, not necessarily a “fee,” while travel, insurance, course tuition and opportunity cost can be real cash costs.
Never divide a multi-year visa's issue fee by its validity and call that the annual cost. Visa validity is not a promise of uninterrupted stay, extensions or admission, and consular fees and evidence can vary by application post.
What each route makes you verify
| Route family | Eligibility evidence | Cost items to model | Official check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retirement | Age, finances and route-specific documents | Issue/extension, funds, insurance where applicable, reporting and travel | Immigration/MFA route page |
| DTV | Qualifying activity and post-specific financial/document evidence | Application, travel between permitted stays, possible extension and dependants | Thai e-Visa and applying mission |
| Education | Genuine programme and required institution/authority documents | Tuition, attendance, visa/extension, transport and materials | Immigration plus school record |
| Family | Relationship, finances and current supporting documents | Visa/extension, document certification and reporting | Immigration/MFA route page |
| Tourism/exemption | Nationality, purpose and rules in force on entry date | Travel, accommodation, extensions and denied-entry contingency | MFA exemption notice/e-Visa |

The cheapest route that's actually you
Over 50
Compare Non-O retirement, O-A, O-X and LTR eligibility. They differ on application route, funds, insurance and stay mechanics; no single option is cheapest for everyone aged 50+.
Working remotely
Check DTV eligibility and evidence on Thai e-Visa and with the mission where you will apply. Do not infer blanket Thai work authorisation from the visa label.
Genuinely want to study
Count tuition, required attendance, transport, documents and extensions. Confirm the school record and Immigration requirements before treating study as a stay route.
Married to a Thai national
Use the family route only where the relationship and current financial/document rules genuinely fit. Employment permission is a separate question.
Just visiting for a few months
Use the exemption or tourist route only for a permitted purpose and duration. Nationality lists and stay periods can change; verify the rule in force before every trip.
Could go either way
If you're unsure which you may qualify for, the visa comparison lays out all 12 routes — or use the planner to build a shortlist before checking the official criteria.
The false economy of tourist runs
An entry fee is not a stay plan. Repeated travel adds transport, accommodation and disruption, and each admission decision is made at the border under the rules then in force. Model those costs and a contingency instead of calling exemption “free.”
Plan against the confirmed 15 September transition. The MFA's 3 September briefing confirms publication in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026. Revised exemption measures commence on 15 September; the previous rules apply to earlier entries and already granted admissions remain valid until their stamped expiry. Consult the nationality chart and any applicable bilateral treatment. This change does not alter other visa categories or guarantee an extension.
Purpose matters. A tourism entry should not be sold as a generic long-stay or remote-work solution. Verify both immigration status and any employment/work-authorisation requirements for your actual activity.
Compare lawful candidates only. Remove every route you do not genuinely qualify for, then compare the full cash cost, funds tied up, obligations and renewal or travel risk across the remaining options.
Cheap on fees isn't cheap on life
A low visa fee says nothing about your real monthly outlay — rent, food, healthcare and transport dwarf any visa cost. Whatever route you pick, model the full picture: see our Pattaya cost of living study and budget healthcare and insurance properly, especially on the no-insurance retirement route.
Compare before you commit

Cheapest way to stay — questions, answered
What is the cheapest lawful long-stay route?
It cannot be answered without nationality, purpose, age, activity, finances, dependants and intended term. Filter by current eligibility first, then compare all required costs and obligations.
Can I annualise a five-year visa fee?
Not as the real cost. Visa validity does not equal uninterrupted permitted stay, and travel, extensions, documents and other obligations may recur.
Can education be a cheap stay route?
Only for genuine study under current school and Immigration requirements. Include tuition, attendance, transport, documentation and extension costs.
How many days can I stay visa-exempt?
It depends on nationality, purpose and entry date. Revised measures take effect on 15 September 2026. Check the current Consular Affairs nationality chart and any bilateral treatment before travel; an existing admission remains valid until its stamped expiry, and an extension is a separate decision.
